Bolivia is the poorest nation is South America with one of the most corrupt governments in the Western hemisphere. Although Bolivia does claim to have a social health system, the corruption limits the services provided to those in need. Join me as I explore the health system of Bolivia and work to provide locals with the information they need to keep themselves healthy and their lives happy.

Day 1

I landed early in Cochabamba and my ride had not yet arrived. So what did I do? I went to get some real South American coffee! I made a mess of my Cafe con Crema but man was it good and totally worth the Bs15 ($2)!

I went to the market to purchase vegetables for the house. We got TONS of stuff and it only cost about $10! I stick out like a sore thumb here though. When riding the trufi (think major passenger van) everyone kept looking at the girl in sunglasses (no one apparently wears them here) who is clearly a few shades too white to be a native. Not to mention that five years of Spanish still comes out as Japanese! Hopefully that won't last too much longer!

I am the only short-term volunteer at the house right now, there are three others who I'm sure I will tell you about later. Tomorrow I meet with Dr. Sanchez to go over what he hopes me to accomplish while I am here. It sounds really exciting! But for now, I'm exhausted and going to bed . . . more (hopefully more excitement and photos!) to come tomorrow!

Hasta Luego!
